OpticalBurnBurning is free. You pay the day a disc stops reading. Most burning software gives you thirty days and then locks the door. We think that is backwards. Nobody argues about price the afternoon the wedding photos will not open — but to be there that afternoon, the program has to have been sitting on the machine for years, doing the ordinary jobs for nothing.
These are photographs of the running program, in order: what it offers, the everyday burn, a big job actually running, and then the half you buy a licence for.
Data. An ISO, bootable ones included. A real Red Book audio CD that plays in a fifteen-year-old car stereo. A USB stick written sector by sector. Then two for the licence holders: MultiDisc, and raw SCSI writing for when you want your hands on the drive.
The gauge fills as you drag files in. Save the list and load it again next month, instead of rebuilding it from memory. The settings underneath are the ones that matter on the day: finalise or leave it open, verify afterwards, write the checksum list onto the disc alongside the files, or stage everything to the hard drive first so a slow source cannot starve the burn.
Pick what you are burning to and the gauge recalculates against it. The speeds on offer are the ones your drive says it can do — read out of the drive, not copied from a list somebody wrote once.
It measures the disc that is actually in the drive — 22.6 GB, not the 25 on the box — works out that four are needed, and tells you the last one will be about a third full. Then it asks for the next disc when it wants it. If you have two drives it will use both and never ask at all. Underneath: how fast it is really going, how full the drive's buffer is, and how much longer.
Sectors die. The recovery pass reads through them one at a time, notes the ones that refuse and keeps going instead of stalling at the first bad patch, then comes back to the skipped ones up to eight times. Whatever still will not read is written down, with the exact position of every lost sector. You are never told "finished" over a file with a hole in it.
Build an ISO now and burn it whenever. Turn a BIN, an IMG or an old Nero NRG into a plain ISO any program will open. Pull files out of an image without burning it or mounting it. And take an audio CD apart into MP3, FLAC or WAV — name the tracks yourself, or leave them numbered.
One click in the title bar. And every screen, every message, every warning exists in twelve languages — Romanian, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Hindi and Bengali.
Burning goes through Windows' own IMAPI engine, the same one the system uses, so nothing installs a driver of its own or wedges itself between Windows and your drive. Raw writing and disc diagnosis are the exceptions — those talk to the drive directly, over SCSI, because there is no other way to do them.
lame and flac encoders come with the download, licences and allThe free half is free for good, not for thirty days. There is nothing to register, and the licence is checked on your own computer without touching the internet.
Verification does not mean "written without an error". It means the disc is read back and compared against what should be on it, byte by byte — and if the check does not reach the end, for whatever reason, it says so plainly instead of quietly passing. The fingerprint list is saved on the disc beside your files as an ordinary SHA256SUMS.txt. In ten years you can check that disc on any computer, with certutil on Windows or sha256sum on Linux, without this program anywhere in sight.
